Understanding American odds
Iowa sportsbooks display odds in American format by default:
- Negative numbers (e.g. -150) = the favorite. You must risk $150 to win $100 profit.
- Positive numbers (e.g. +130) = the underdog. A $100 bet wins $130 profit.
- Even (+100 or -100) = a 50/50 line. Risk $100 to win $100.
You can switch most apps to decimal or fractional odds in settings if you prefer.
Bankroll and unit sizing
A "unit" is your standard bet size, typically 1–2% of your total bankroll. If your bankroll is $500, a 1-unit bet is $5. Keep unit size flat and never chase losses by doubling up after a bad run; variance evens out over hundreds of bets, not 10.
Responsible play
Sports betting is entertainment, not income. Set a deposit limit at every operator (all Iowa sportsbooks support it in Settings → Responsible Play). If you feel betting is becoming a problem, call 1-800-BETS-OFF or visit 1800betsoff.org for free, confidential help.
