Iowa Retail Sportsbooks
Iowa has 19 retail sportsbook locations operating inside licensed casino properties across the state. Together they handle about $3.79M per month; roughly 1.5% of all Iowa sports betting volume, with the rest going through mobile apps.
The Iowa retail picture
Iowa launched both retail and mobile sports betting on August 15, 2019; the same day. While mobile dominates today (98.5% of handle), retail sportsbooks remain meaningful for gameday atmosphere, large cash wagers, and bettors who prefer to deal with a counter ticket-writer. Many of Iowa's 19 retail locations also serve as the legal "anchor" for their mobile partner skin.

How retail betting works in Iowa
- Cash wagers accepted. Walk up to the counter with cash, name your bet, get a paper ticket. Hold the ticket; cash it back at the counter after the game settles.
- 21+ ID required. All Iowa casinos check government-issued ID at the door and at the sportsbook counter.
- No account needed for cash bets. Pure cash-in/cash-out; anonymous up to federal reporting thresholds.
- W-2G triggered on large wins. Same federal reporting rules apply as mobile; wins of $5,000+ at 300:1 odds trigger reporting.
- Some properties have full live-betting kiosks alongside the staffed counter for in-game wagers.
Why mobile dominates Iowa
Convenience. After Iowa lifted the mandatory in-person registration requirement on January 1, 2021, mobile handle surged. By 2026 the split is 98.5% mobile / 1.5% retail by handle volume. Most Iowans use retail only for casino visits, Hawkeyes/Cyclones gameday or large cash wagers; and bet daily through licensed mobile apps.
