Futures Betting
A futures bet is a long-term wager on something that resolves weeks or months later; Super Bowl winner, NBA MVP, College Football Playoff champion. You lock in a price now and wait.
How futures odds move
Futures lines update constantly based on results, injuries, and how much money each side attracts. A team that wins early in the NFL season sees its Super Bowl odds shorten; a 2-5 start moves them out from +1200 to +5000.
Common Iowa futures markets
- Super Bowl winner; open in February for the next season. 32 markets per book.
- NFL MVP; usually 30+ players priced; QBs typically dominate the top of the board.
- NBA Championship; opens in October, closes when the Finals begin.
- College Football Playoff Champion; Hawkeyes and Cyclones futures are popular Iowa locals plays.
- Big Ten / Big 12 winner; conference futures.
- Heisman Trophy; opens in summer, narrows by mid-October.
- Win totals; over/under regular-season wins for each team.
The case for futures
- Big payouts. A $20 bet on a +2000 longshot pays $400.
- All-season entertainment. A live ticket adds investment to every game.
- Hedging opportunities. If your future contender makes the Super Bowl, you can hedge with the moneyline on game day to guarantee profit.
The case against futures
- Massive vig. Futures markets often carry 30-50% built-in margin. Implied probabilities sum well over 100%.
- Locked capital. Money is tied up for months. Use a small share of bankroll only.
- Variance. Even strong calls can lose because injuries reshape every season.
Where to bet futures in Iowa
Most operators post identical futures, but pricing varies. Circa Sports and SuperBook typically offer the best (lowest-vig) odds on major futures markets. DraftKings and FanDuel have the widest market list including award futures and "exact-result" parlays.
