Prop Bets
A "proposition" bet is a wager on a specific event inside a game; a player's stat line, a team milestone, or a niche event like first scoring play.
The three main prop categories
- Player props: Mahomes over 285.5 passing yards. Caitlin Clark over 28.5 points. Most popular category by handle in Iowa.
- Team props: Hawkeyes over 4.5 first-half points. Bears to score first.
- Game props: First touchdown scorer. Coin-toss result. Will the game go to overtime.
Why props are different
Sides and totals are sharp markets; sportsbooks invest heavily in pricing them and lines barely move. Props are softer. Prop lines on second-tier college football games or backup NBA players are often set by algorithms with limited data. This is where retail bettors who do real homework can find edges.
Iowa allows full college player props
This is a key Iowa advantage. Many states (Ohio, New Jersey at times, Maryland) restrict college player props. Iowa allows full prop betting on Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa State Cyclones, Drake Bulldogs and Northern Iowa Panthers; including individual player markets like passing yards, rushing yards, receiving yards, touchdowns, sacks and interceptions.
Where to find the best prop markets
- Volume of markets: DraftKings and FanDuel post the deepest player prop menus.
- Sharp pricing: Circa posts fewer props but tighter lines.
- Live props: bet365 excels at in-game prop markets.
Prop betting strategy
- Target backup-friendly spots. When a starter is out, books are slower to adjust the backup's projected workload than the moneyline.
- Compare across books. Mahomes passing yards may be 285.5 at one book and 282.5 at another. Three yards is a meaningful edge.
- Beware juice. Soft prop lines often come with -120 or worse on both sides. The vig eats your edge if you're not selective.
- Track injury news. Most edges in props come from being 60 seconds ahead of the public.
