August 2026 Iowa Sports Betting Report: $186M Handle but a Softer Hold Trims Revenue to $17M

Iowa's August 2026 IRGC figures show handle edging up 1.4% to $185.5 million as football season approaches. But the books held softer this time. A 9.2% hold pulled operator revenue down 4.7% to $17.1 million, reversing July's firm month even though bettors wagered more.

Month at a glance

Total handle$185,516,329 +1.4% vs July
Operator net receipts$17,115,272 −4.7% vs July
Hold percentage9.2% −0.6pp vs July
Total payouts to bettors$168,401,057
State tax remitted$1,154,889 −4.8% vs July
Online handle$178,229,863 (96.1%)
Retail handle$7,286,466 (3.9%)

August is the second month of Iowa's fiscal year, and it opened the slow climb out of the summer trough. Handle rose 1.4% to $185.5M as college football's opening weekend and NFL preseason began to draw action late in the month. But the difference from July was margin. After July's firm 9.8% hold, the books slipped back to 9.2%, and that alone turned a higher-handle month into a lower-revenue one.

Softer hold does the heavy lifting

The month is a clean demonstration of how hold, not handle, drives revenue in a mature market:

Handle change vs July+1.4% ($185.5M vs $182.9M)
Revenue change vs July−4.7% ($17.1M vs $18.0M)
Hold change vs July9.2% vs 9.8% (−0.6pp)

Handle rose and revenue fell, the exact inverse of July. Bettors wagered slightly more, but a softer hold meant the books kept a smaller cut, and the 6.75% state tax eased in lockstep. Read July and August together and the two-month average hold lands close to the operators' long-run number, a reminder that a single month of hold tells you less than a run of them.

Online grows as retail pulls back

Online handle rose 2.9% to $178.2M while retail handle fell 25% to $7.3M, cutting the retail share to 3.9% from July's 5.3%. July's retail bump proved to be the outlier: the walk-up counter action that summer soccer and baseball had drawn faded, and the mix returned to its usual shape. Online now owns 96.1% of the Iowa market, back near its typical level.

Fanatics Sportsbook FBG Iowa LLC $12.2M $1.1M 8.9%

BetRivers Rush Street Interactive IA, LLC $1.5M $107K 7.0%
Bally Bet Bally's Management Group, LLC $811K $91K 11.2%

DraftKings and FanDuel combined for $117.6M in online handle, a 66.0% share and a near-repeat of July's grip on the market. DraftKings led at $70.9M on flat handle, firming its hold to 10.3%. FanDuel followed at $46.7M but held a softer 8.8%, down from July's 11.4%, one of the main reasons the statewide hold eased.

SuperBook pulls clear as bet365 slides

July's tight race for third turned into a rout. SuperBook surged 20% to $18.7M and took a clear hold on the number-three slot, while bet365 fell the other way, dropping 26% to $11.2M and two places to fifth. The $400K gap that separated them in July became a $7.5M lead for SuperBook:

  • SuperBook ($18.7M, 10.5% share), up from $15.56M in July, its strongest month of the year, holding a bettor-friendly 7.8%.
  • Fanatics ($12.2M, 6.8% share), jumped 39% from July to leap over bet365 and BetMGM into fourth.
  • bet365 ($11.2M, 6.3% share), gave back all of its summer gains, holding a thin 7.5%.
  • BetMGM ($10.0M, 5.6% share), eased 12% to sixth, holding 7.2%.

Circa Sports makes it four

Circa Sports posted negative net receipts of −$44,471 on $2.2M of online handle, a fourth straight losing month. The streak now reads May −$46,425, June −$2,738, July −$141,680 and August −$44,471. August's loss was smaller than July's but still a 2.0% margin in the bettors' favor. Four consecutive red months is a firm pattern, consistent with Circa's low-vig, sharp-tolerant model, where a well-picked bettor base can beat the house over a run of low-volume months. Whether a full football slate firms it up is the question for the fall.

Sporttrade off the list, two entities file zero

August's report again shows ten operators taking online wagers, unchanged from July. Two other licensed entities filed $0 in online handle for the month, SCE Partners, LLC and Sports Information Group, LLC. Sporttrade Iowa LLC, which reported $0 in both June and July, does not appear on the August operator list.

State tax under SF 605

August generated $1.15 million in state tax from operator revenue, the eighth full month under the SF 605 player-side withholding regime and the second month of fiscal year 2027. The month-over-month decrease mirrors the revenue dip, since a softer hold means a smaller 6.75% tax base. Use our tax calculator if you need to estimate withholding on a specific wager.

What to watch in September

  • Football volume: NFL Week 1 and a full college football calendar land in September, the first real lift out of the summer trough.
  • The third-place slot: does SuperBook hold its new lead, or does bet365 climb back once football action returns?
  • Hold: a fuller football book often firms the statewide hold back toward double digits.
  • Circa in the fall: does a busier slate finally break the four-month losing streak?
  • Retail's share: August fell to 3.9%; does football bring counter action back?
